PNP NOC code requirements: will your job qualify for a nomination?

By Check My NOC · Published

Short answer

Most provincial nominee streams accept only certain NOC codes or TEER levels. The province, and later IRCC, check that the duties in your reference letter match the code you claimed. Confirm your code and the stream's eligible occupations before you apply, because a mismatch can cost you the nomination or your PR.

Do your reference letter duties support the NOC code you're claiming?

How provinces use your NOC code

  • Eligible occupation lists. Many streams target in-demand jobs, such as health care, tech or trades, and list the NOC codes they accept.
  • TEER level limits. Some streams accept only TEER 0–3 jobs. Others have separate streams for TEER 4–5.
  • Excluded occupations. Some provinces exclude certain codes even when the TEER level qualifies.
  • Job offer match. For employer streams, the job offer must fit the same NOC code as your experience.

Your NOC gets checked twice

The province reviews your NOC code when it decides on your nomination. Then IRCC reviews it again when you apply for permanent residence. A nomination doesn't protect you: if the duties don't match, IRCC can still send a procedural fairness letter or refuse.

Check these before you apply

  1. Your duties match the main duties of your NOC code. See how to check your NOC code.
  2. Your code and TEER level are on the stream's current eligible list. Rules change, so check the province's official website.
  3. Your Express Entry profile, PNP application and reference letters all claim the same code.
  4. Your reference letter shows hours, salary and exact dates. See the hours and salary guide.

FAQ

Do provincial nominee programs check my NOC code?
Yes. Most PNP streams are limited to certain NOC codes or TEER levels, and the province checks that your job offer or work experience really fits the code you claimed. The duties in your reference letter are what they compare.
Can I use a different NOC code for my PNP than for Express Entry?
Your NOC code has to describe the job you actually did. If your Express Entry profile and your provincial application claim different codes for the same job, expect questions. Fix the code before you apply to either.
What happens if my NOC code doesn't match after I'm nominated?
IRCC checks your work experience again when you apply for permanent residence. A mismatch can lead to a procedural fairness letter or a refusal, even after the province nominated you.
Which PNP streams don't depend on my NOC code?
A few graduate and business streams care less about your occupation, but most worker and in-demand streams use NOC code or TEER lists. Check each stream's current rules on the province's official website.
